This smash burger with caramelized onions on an English muffin is one of my favorite smash burger creations yet. The crispy-edged patty, melty American cheese, and gorgeously caramelized onions all come together on a perfectly toasted English muffin.
If you're tired of your standard smash burger on a normal burger bun, give this recipe a try. There's just something about the toasty, crunchy English muffin that takes this smash burger to the next level.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
- Ground Beef — I'm using a 3.5 ounce beef ball, an 80/20 blend. Perfect for smashing.
- Yellow Onion — My favorite smash burgers all have caramelized onions on them.
- American Cheese — There's no better cheese than American when you're making a smash burger—it melts perfectly.
- English Muffin — The English muffin has just the right amount of crunch and chew after we toast it in a little bit of butter.
- Shredded Iceberg Lettuce — The iceberg adds a light, cool, crisp texture that just goes perfectly on this burger.
- Dill Pickle Slices — For a little tang and crunch—I'm almost always adding pickles to my smash burgers.
- Burger Sauce — I'm mixing up a quick, easy burger sauce to bring everything together.
- Butter — To caramelize the onions and toast the English muffin.
- Lawry's Seasoned Salt — To season the burger meat. Of course, you can just use salt & pepper if you prefer.

1. Caramelize the Onions
Slice your onions with a mandoline or sharp knife. Add them to a hot skillet over medium heat with the melted butter. Season the onions and let them cook for 10-15 minutes until they're soft and golden brown, stirring occasionally. Remove the onions from the heat and set them aside.
2. Toast the English Muffin
Split the English muffin in half and toast until it's golden and crunchy. Set it aside with the onions.
3. Make the Burger
Measure out a 3.5-ounce ball of ground beef and then add it to your hot griddle. Use a burger press or spatula to smash the meat down into the griddle until it's nice and thin. Immediately season the patty with the Lawry's, and let the patty cook for about 2 minutes, until it's developed a nice crust on the bottom. Then flip the patty over to the other side, and immediately add the American cheese. Let it cook for another 1-2 minutes, until the cheese is nice and melty.
4. Assemble the Burger
Now it's time to put it all together. Spread some of the burger sauce on the bottom half of the toasted English muffin. Then add a handful of the shredded iceberg lettuce. Next, add the burger patty with melted cheese on top of the lettuce. Top the patty with the caramelized onions and pickle slices. Spread some more of the burger sauce on the top half of the muffin and place it on top to finish the burger. Serve and enjoy!

Smash Burger with Caramelized Onions on an English Muffin
Ingredients
- 3.5 oz ground beef 80/20 blend
- 1/4 sweet onion thinly sliced
- 1 slice American cheese
- 1 English muffin split and toasted
- 1 handful iceberg lettuce shredded
- 4 dill pickle slices
- 1 tbsp burger sauce
- 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tsp Lawry's seasoning salt
Instructions
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the sliced onion with a pinch of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, stirring occasionally until the onions are soft and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Toast the split English muffin until golden and crisp. Set it aside to cool slightly while you prepare the patty.
- Roll the ground beef into a loose ball, being careful not to overwork it. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the beef ball in the skillet and let it sear for 30 seconds. Use a spatula or grill press to smash the patty to about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with Lawry's Seasoned Salt and cook for 2 minutes to form a crust. Flip the patty, top with a slice of American cheese, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the patty is cooked through.
- Spread half of the burger sauce on the bottom half of the toasted English muffin. Add a small handful of shredded iceberg lettuce, then place the cooked patty on top. Layer with the caramelized onions and pickle slices, then spread the remaining burger sauce on the top half of the muffin. Place it on top to finish the burger.
