SERVINGS
Servings: 1 burger
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3.5 oz ground beef 80/20 blend
  • 1/4 sweet onion thinly sliced
  • 1 slice American cheese
  • 1 English muffin split and toasted
  • 1 handful iceberg lettuce shredded
  • 4 dill pickle slices
  • 1 tbsp burger sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp Lawry's seasoning salt

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the sliced onion with a pinch of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, stirring occasionally until the onions are soft and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Toast the split English muffin until golden and crisp. Set it aside to cool slightly while you prepare the patty.
  • Roll the ground beef into a loose ball, being careful not to overwork it. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the beef ball in the skillet and let it sear for 30 seconds. Use a spatula or grill press to smash the patty to about 1/4 inch thick. Sprinkle with Lawry's Seasoned Salt and cook for 2 minutes to form a crust. Flip the patty, top with a slice of American cheese, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and the patty is cooked through.
  • Spread half of the burger sauce on the bottom half of the toasted English muffin. Add a small handful of shredded iceberg lettuce, then place the cooked patty on top. Layer with the caramelized onions and pickle slices, then spread the remaining burger sauce on the top half of the muffin. Place it on top to finish the burger.

Notes

  • Homemade Burger Sauce. I have a few different burger sauce recipes you can try: Shake Shack Burger SauceIn-N-Out Burger Sauce, or my classic burger sauce.
  • Crust is Key. The key to a great smash burger is getting a nice crust. Press the patty firmly and let it cook undisturbed to create those signature crispy edges.
  • Toast Like a Pro. Butter the English muffin lightly before toasting for an extra layer of flavor.
