These crunchy Doritos smoked wings are absolutely insane. I'm marinating these wings in buttermilk, then coating them with a mixture of crushed Doritos and a Buffalo Ranch seasoning.
Then I'm tossing them on the smoker and pairing them with my homemade Ranch dressing and blue cheese. You're definitely going to want to make these for the next big game.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE
- Chicken wings — I used a package of Bell & Evans pre-cut wings
- Buttermilk — buttermilk will help tenderize the wings and adds a little tangy flavor
- Nacho Cheese Doritos — yeah, we're coating our wings in Doritos. Trust me, it's awesome
- Buffalo Ranch Seasoning — I picked this up in the spice aisle at my local grocery store
- Eggs — We're dipping the wings in eggs to help the Doritos stick to the wings
- Cooking spray — This helps the wings crisp up while we're smoking them
HOW TO MAKE DORITOS SMOKED WINGS
1. Marinate the Wings
Add the buttermilk and the wings to a large Ziploc bag, making sure the wings are fully submerged. Refrigerate for at least two hours, or if you have enough time, overnight.
2. Make the Doritos Coating
Crush up the Doritos using either a food processor, or just mash them up in a plastic bag, so they have a fine, crumb-like texture. Add them to a shallow dish along with the Buffalo Ranch seasoning, and mix it up.
In a separate bowl, add the eggs and whisk them up until they're fully beaten.
3. Coat the Wings
Remove the wings from the buttermilk bath and let any excess liquid fall off. Coat each wing by first submerging it into the egg mixture. Then, press the wing into the Doritos mixture, making sure that its evenly coated on all sides.
4. Smoke the Wings
Preheat your smoker to 250F. Lightly mist the wings with the olive oil spray the help them get crisp while they're cooking.
Smoke the wings until they hit an internal temp of 175F—for me, this took a little under two hours.
5. Serve & Enjoy
Remove from the smoker, and *be sure* to serve with either Ranch or blue cheese.
PRO TIPS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE
- Blue cheese or Ranch is a MUST. These wings won't taste amazing without dipping them in blue cheese or Ranch (or both). The Doritos crust by its nature is a little "dry" so these wings *need* a dipping sauce.
- Smash the Doritos. Make sure you smash the Doritos into a pulp before dipping the wings into them. I put mine in a Ziploc bag and smashed them up with a kitchen mallet. The finer the Doritos are, the better they'll stick to your wings.
