This is the viral chopped Italian sandwich and I have to say–it tastes *amazing* and is super easy to put together.  It's really as easy as slapping down all of your ingredients onto a cutting board, giving them a good chop and mix, and then shoving the whole mixture into a sub roll.

The real secret to this recipe is using the ingredients that *you* like in an Italian sub. For example, I don't love tomatoes, so I didn't use them in my version. So feel free to swap in/out any ingredients you see fit.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

not pictured above, but needed: mayo & provolone cheese

  • Shredded Lettuce — I love using shredded lettuce for my Italian subs.
  • Deli Meats — I'm using capicola, salami, pepperoni, and ham for a perfect combo, but feel free to use your own combination here.
  • Cheese — For an Italian sub, I think you have to go with provolone.
  • Red Onion — For a little crunch and texture.
  • Banana Peppers — To bring a little heat and added crunch.
  • Hot Pepper Relish — To me this is the secret "sauce"—just a touch brings a really bold flavor to the sub.
  • Red Wine Vinegar & Olive Oil — The classic dressing combo.
  • Mayo — I love mayo on my Italian sandwiches. It adds a nice creaminess.
  • Seasonings — Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to tie it all together.
  • Sub Roll — A sturdy roll to hold everything together.

1. Chop the Main Ingredients

Add the shredded lettuce, deli meats, provolone, red onion, and banana peppers to a large cutting board. Then use a sharp knife to finely chop all the ingredients together until they’re into bite-sized pieces.

2. Add the Seasoning & Dressings

Next add your olive oil and red wine vinegar, followed by a spoonful of mayo. Then add the hot pepper relish, Italian seasoning, and salt & pepper.

3. Mix it All Together

Use a spatula or knife to then mix all of the ingredients well together, so the meats, cheese, veggies, and dressings are perfectly combined.

4. Scoop Into the Roll

Place the sub roll directly on top of the mixture. Use a spatula to scoop the mixture into the roll, gently pressing it down to hold its shape.

5. Serve & Enjoy

Slice the sub in half and enjoy immediately.

PRO TIPS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE

  • Make It Your Own. Use mortadella or prosciutto for different deli meat options—this Italian is truly meant to be customized to however you like it.
  • Bread Options. A seeded Italian roll or ciabatta would also work really well with this recipe. Toasting the bread after to make it panini-style also crossed my mind when making this.
